Project Management
Project Management is the active management of an incomplete task…
The term “Project Management” has become uncertain in its meaning following its adoption by a variety of industries and organisations for numerous situations.
We see Project Management as the catalyst for understanding and achievement between Client on the one hand and the Design and Construction Teams on the other. Such a service, when appointed, extends to advising the Client on all matters, and frequently acting as their representative. This representation involves the Project Management and direction of the many parties by setting a course for the project and helping everyone in the project team to keep to it.
To get the best from Project Management
The Client has a significant role in ensuring that the project is set on the right course.
The Client should:
- Establish a clear definition of the main goals – in a Master Brief.
- Select a competent organisation with enthusiastic key project personnel.
- Establish a frank, close working relationship that goes beyond the main “works” to include all aspects e.g. finance, property, production.
- Define simple management procedures and systems for reporting.
- Delegate power to allow the Project Manager to resolve many difficulties and disruptions which inevitably occur on projects.
The Brief
A comprehensive, well written master Brief is invaluable. It can take the form of:
- Two or three pages describing the overall task – e.g a Chief Executive’s Statement.
- A set of strategic, tactical and technical statements.
- Comprehensive and extensive performance specifications (frequently for single projects).
- In all cases the Project Manager should help and advise the Client on the most suitable form of the Brief.
